Student Accessibility

NSBT takes seriously its responsibility to identify and maintain standards that are fundamental to providing a quality online, academic program at the graduate level, while protecting the rights of all individuals with disabilities. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, a disability is a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities of such individual, a record of such an impairment, or being regarded as having such an impairment (42 U.S.C. § 12102). Students with a diagnosed disability may be entitled to accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Students who seek such an accommodation must be prepared to submit documentation by a licensed health provider (physician, psychologist, psychiatrist, or counselor). The Dean will see that reasonable accommodations are made for such a student in each course, and that disclosure of this information is strictly on a “need to know” basis for faculty and others involved in teaching. Even with accommodations, students are required to meet all course and program requirements.

Requesting an accommodation

• First, the student submits the accommodation request form published on the Student Accessibility page of the institutional website.
• Second, the student submits documentation from a licensed provider supporting the accommodations requested.

An accommodation that would fundamentally alter the nature of a course or a program requirement is not a reasonable accommodation.

A student who believes an accommodation decision is wrong may ask for it to be reviewed. The request is made in writing to the Dean of Institutional Effectiveness and Academic Programs and Director of Field Education within 30 days of the date of the written decision, and states what the student sought, what was decided, and why the student believes the decision should change.

This form does not ask for a diagnosis. The documentation from the licensed provider carries what the Academic Dean needs, and it is held separately from the student’s academic record.
